Stephen Ferris (born 2 August 1985) is an ex-retired Irish union rugby athlete who played with Ulster in the Ulster team and also represented Ireland internationally. Ferris played for the club with Dungannon. He hails from Maghaberry and was a student at Friends school Lisburn. He was a player in the national teams of Ulster as well as Ireland in the three positions of backrow. Ferris was retired from the sport in June 2014 following a lengthy ankle injury that ended his playing career.

In the 2011-12 season, Ulster and Ferris shone on the European stage, with the Irish team achieving an unforgettable win of 41-7 against Leicester at Ravenhill in the Heineken Cup group stages. Despite the injury, Ferris performed valiantly earning the honour of man of the match in Ulster’s Heineken cup quarter-final win against Munster. Because of his impressive performances, Ferris was nominated to be the ERC Europe Award for Player of the Year 2012. Ulster lost to Leinster during the 2012 Heineken Cup Final, 42-14. Ferris was last in action with Edinburgh in November of 2012, because of an ankle injury that he suffered. The injury hindered a successful move to Japan. He remained with Ulster with a one-year contract, while undergoing rehab, and then returned to play the Scarlets on the 14th of March 2014 when he stepped from the sidelines to standing ovations, following his absence of 15 months. Ulster won at the Scarlets contest 26-13. However, the injury was recurring, and forced Ferris to quit in June of 2014, aged 28.

Ferris made his return to international cricket in an autumn tournament later in the same year. He was prominent in the tough draw against Australia and also in the impressive win against South Africa, 15-10. Ferris participated in four of Ireland’s Six Nations matches, but did not participate in during the 2009 Summer Tour through injury. But he did make his international return in the November Tests of 2010 and scored his first international goal in the match against New Zealand at the new Landsdowne Road, and scoring his second try against Argentina. Ferris was unable to play in this year’s Six Nations, and the second portion of the season 2010/2011 due to injury, but he returned to play for Ireland in the match against France on August 20 during an 2011, Rugby World Cup warm-up test after being included in Ireland’s team of training to play in the 2011 World Cup. In the course of the tournament, Ferris shined in their victory against Australia in the group stage. Ferris opted for the well-known wrap around attack to stop the Wallabies from playing fast ball when Declan Kidney’s team won 15-6. Ireland ultimately lost before Wales in the quarterfinals, however, Ferris was among the top players at the tournament.
