As of 2008, Lafuente began her career at European Championships. She placed 30th at her debut Senior Worlds. The following year she was 23rd in Europeans as well as 26th in Worlds however, neither of these results allow her to compete in her participation in the Winter Olympics. However she did get into the Olympics by finishing 8th in the 2009 Nebelhorn Trophy, and finished 22nd in Vancouver. The following year she was awarded her very first Grand Prix assignments, and was ranked 10th and 7th respectively during the 2010 Skate Canada International as well as the Skate Canada International and the Trophee Eric Bompard. She finished 11th during the European Championships but did not get a free skate at Worlds.

The 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy was the last opportunity to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Lafuente was unable to win one of the six available ladies’ berths, finishing 26th. In October 2013, she decided to move to Toronto, Ontario, Canada to train in Brian Orser’s group. In 2014, she began working with Ghisland Briand and Tracy Wilson as her coaches.

Lafuente finished 7th at the 2013 European Championships and earned the minimum score to compete at the 2013 World Championships where she was 22nd.

In the 2006-07 winter season, Lafuente was one of the few Spanish skater to be awarded the Junior Grand Prix medal. She was a regular skater in Majadahonda.

Sonia Lafuente Martinez (born 7 December 1991) is a Spanish figure skater. She has been an eight-time Spanish nation champion. Lafuente was one of the very first Spanish skater to win a medal at the ISU Junior Grand Prix circuit after she took bronze at the 2006 Mexico Cup.

Lafuente started skating at the age of four when her parents took her along with their sister out to the brand new skating rink in Madrid. Carolina Sanz and Ivan Saez were her coaches for the majority of her time. In the 2003-04 season Lafuente made her debut in international competition as a rookie and won her bronze medal in the Merano Cup, an event she would win a year after. She started playing in junior internationals in 2005-06.

Lafuente was 9th at the 2011 Nebelhorn Trophy, 7th at the 2011 Trophee Eric Bompard, 5th at the 2011 Golden Spin of Zagreb, and 15th at the 2012 European Championships in Sheffield.
