Tokolahi was born in Tonga, Tokolahi showed promise to become a star player at a young age. He was then brought into New Zealand on a Sean Fitzpatrick scholarship to study at Sacred Heart College in Auckland. In 2009, at the age of 17 Tokolahi changed schools into St. Bede’s College in Christchurch and was then able to play in Canterbury’s youth squads. The move was controversial at the time , and resulted in allegations of poaching made by the Canterbury Rugby Union. After graduating from high school, Tokolahi was a member of the academy of Canterbury in 2012 as well as was part of the Crusaders Knights development squad in 2013. He was able to make seven appearances, two starts, and 5 on the bench when his team made it to the ITM Cup semi- finals before losing out to Tasman.

Searching for a more regular starting role at Super Rugby level, Tokolahi switched franchises ahead of the 2017 Super Rugby season, leaving the Chiefs in favour of the Dunedin-based Highlanders, tournament winners in 2015, who were seeking front-row replacements for the departed Josh Hohneck and the injured Brendon Edmonds.
