He was the holder of the WBA light Welterweight title from 1998 until 2001, as well as the IBF intermediate light welterweight championship from 2004.
Mitchell had a 31-0 record before he lost two consecutive fights at the start of 1994. First, against the future world champion Leavander Johnson after eight rounds. Then he lost to two-time world champion Stevie Johnston in nine rounds. Mitchell did not lose another bout in the subsequent seven years.
On May 10, 1997, Mitchell defeated Jose Rafael Barboza by a twelve-round decision in Miami, Florida to win the WBA’s Fedelatin belt in the same weight division. After two more victories, he got his first chance at winning a world title.
On October 10, 1998, he beat Moroccan Khalid Rahilou by a twelve-round unanimous decision in Paris, France, becoming the WBA light welterweight champion.
Mitchell continued to win by bringing his record to 27-0, with 16 knockouts, including a win against the former world title challenger Miguel Santana. Then, he fought the former World Champion Rocky Lockridge on April 22 in 1992, securing an unanimity decision in ten rounds.
