Martinson graduated in 1977 from MSU CMC. Baltic News Service was founded by Martinson and is the CEO. It is a major news agency in the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. It was founded in 1990 by a group of students from Estonia in Moscow. The organization quickly grew to become a major regional news agency with nearly 200 employees. BNS was funded by Dow Jones Telerate and the Swedish Bonnier media company in 1994. Finnish Alma Media purchased the company in 2001.

Martinson was appointed CEO of MicroLink in 1998. MicroLink is the largest IT and technology holdings in the Baltics. It was Estonia’s largest PC manufacturer and had expanded into systems integration, internet access services, and other business ventures. Martinson launched a bold expansion strategy for Microlink, which was supported by four rounds private equity placements from Baltic Investments Fund and Baltic Republics Fund. In 1998-2000, the company acquired or merged 15 other companies, including Estonia’s No2 IT company Astrodata, Latvian IT market leaders Fortech, VAR and 7 internet service providers (ISPs), in all three countries. With 60 million EUR in annual sales and 600 employees, the company was recognized as one of the most successful IT services and systems integration groups in the Baltics. MicroLink’s IT services were sold to three incumbent Baltic telecoms in a 2005 trade transaction.

In 2004, Martinson teamed up with the leading Baltic investment bank Trigon Capital and launched a technology investment company “Martinson Trigon Venture Partners” (MTVP). He bought out Trigon and became the sole owner of MTVP in

2008. The company invested 20 m USD into nine companies: Russian software engineering company Reksoft, Russian computer games publisher “Novyi Disk”, cloud-to-desktop technology company “InvisibleCRM”, Finnish casual games company Playforia, next-generation online dating company “Flirtic”, Lithuanian data center operator “Hostex”, data communications operator MicroLink Lithuania, MTV franchise MTV Baltics.
