Malcolm Batten, born 12 March 1964, is an Australian former state, national, and world champion rower, as well as an Olympian, Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, and World Champion.

Batten was selected as a senior representative at the 1986 World Rowing Championships, Nottingham, England. He was the winner of the Australian men’s eight. This was Australia’s first and sole World Championship title in men’s eight. The same year, Batten won the Australian men’s VIII gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games.

At the 1987 World Rowing Championships in Copenhagen Batten was again in the two seat of Australian eight. That crew placed fourth.

For the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Batten was beaten out for his seat in the Australian men’s eight by South Australian rower Hamish McLachlan. Batten and Sam Patten were selected in the squad as reserves for the eight and qualified a coxless pair. They raced in heats at the Seoul Olympics but were eliminated in the repechage.

He was the first Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder in 1985. From 1985 to 1988, he held full AIS scholarships. In 1988, he moved to Melbourne and joined the Mercantile Rowing Club. He was one of the founding members of the RMIT Rowing Club in 1988.

Batten was born in Tasmania. He began his rowing career as a coxswain in the North Esk Rowing Club, Launceston in 1979. Before moving to Brisbane, he rowed with the Tweed Heads Rowing Club for a season in 1982.

Batten was selected as a national representative at the 1985 Match des Seniors, Banyoles (Spain) – which was the equivalent of the World Rowing U23 Championships. Batten won a silver medal in the Australian men’s eight. The same crew represented Australia at the 1985 Trans-Tasman U/23 regatta, held on Lake Ruataniwha, New Zealand.
