Allan Havis is one of the most popular and richest Playwright who was born on September 26, 1951 in New York, United States. He edited three plays anthologies: American Political Plays (2001), published at University of Illinois Press, American Political Plays After 9/11 (2010) published by Southern Illinois University Press, and American Political Plays In the Age of Terrorism 2019 published by Bloomsbury/Methuen.
Havis also wrote librettos to operas. To use his 1990 play Lilith as a libretto in an opera with music from Anthony Davis, he adapted it. This chamber opera focuses on the mythical first woman to join Adam in the Garden of Eden. She was believed to have been supernaturally demonized. On December 4, 2009, the Conrad Prebys Music Center in San Diego hosted the world premiere concert recital. A showcase presentation and new production of Lilith was given at the Qualcomm Institute (UC San Diego) in November 2015. You can view this work on UCSD TV Online.
His third opera libretto, St. Francis de los Barrios, was given a showcase presentation at the Qualcomm Institute, UC San Diego in December 2017.

He has been the director of the University of California, San Diego’s MFA playwriting program for many years. From 2006 to 2016, he was the Provost at Thurgood Marshall College in San Diego. He is the father of two children.
His second opera, also developed with composer Anthony Davis, explored a modern King Lear archetype, with a woman neuroscientist with Alzheimer’s disease as the protagonist. Lear on the 2nd Floor had a showcase presentation at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts in March 2012 and was produced in March 2013 at Conrad Prebys Music Center, UC San Diego.
