Following last year’s Varsity Cup, Kirkwood once got involved at a provincial level, becoming a part of his Golden Lions’ near-neighbours, Kempton Park’s based team Falcons during the 2013 Currie Cup First Division season. The player was able to make the Falcons debut – and also his first match as a senior for nearly four years – during their opening game of the season with the Griffons. The game ended with an even 30-all draw, however Kirkwood’s debut was delayed by a yellow flag that he was given in the 12th minute the game. Kirkwood got his very first senior score in their third game in the league, which was a 37-38 loss against the SWD Eagles at Kempton Park. He played nine appearances during the campaign , as the Falcons were unable to finish top of the league.
He also joined the university side UJ in 2011 for their Varsity Cup competition. He quickly became a major player for UJ as he played in seven of the eight matches in the semi-finals. Kirkwood was chosen as a representative of his country’s Golden Lions at the 2007 Under-18 Craven Week event that was held in Stellenbosch. The following year, he was part of the Golden Lions U19 squad that participated in the Provincial Under-19 Championship, an event where he also participated during the year 2008.
He had his first taste of top-quality action in the 2009 Vodacom Cup competition when he played three times as substitute for the Golden Lions. His first appearance was on the 7th of March 2009 against the Pumas during a match at Randfontein. He made his debut as a substitute following 54 minutes, and it took only thirteen minutes before scoring his senior debut. He scored five tries in the loss 34-47. He played two more appearances at the tournament in games between Falcons and the Griffons as well as the Falcons. In the second quarter in the season, he played for in the Golden Lions U21s in the Under-21 Provincial Championship of 2009 like he did in 2010. He did not appear again at the top level.
Despite missing part of the 2014 Vodacom Cup season due to his involvement in the Varsity Cup, Kirkwood made three appearances in the competition and also scored a try in his only start of the campaign, a 34–64 loss to eventual champions Griquas. The Falcons then participated in the 2014 Currie Cup qualification competition; the winner of the competition would qualify to the 2014 Currie Cup Premier Division, but the Falcons finished in sixth position to remain in the 2014 Currie Cup First Division. Kirkwood started all six of their qualification matches and also scored a try in their 52–34 victory against the SWD Eagles in George. He also started all of their games in the First Division, also scoring a try against the Griffons in a 36–27 win, a result that played a large part in seeing them qualify for the semi-finals of the competition. Kirkwood started the semi-final match against the Leopards in Potchefstroom, where the Falcons caused an upset by winning 31–24 to progress to the final. However, they fell just short against the Griffons in the final, losing 21–23.
