Shane Gates is one of the most popular and richest Rugby Union Player who was born on September 27, 1992 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa. His birthplace was in Port Elizabeth and played for the Eastern Province Kings in several underage tournaments. He was a part of the team in the Under-18 Craven Week event in 2010, and was a part of the Eastern Province U19 side in the 2010 Under-19 Provincial Championship. He was a part of in the Eastern Province U21 side in the 2012 and 2013 championships and helped them make it to the final of Division B on three occasions while also winning the championship in 2012 and 2013.

Gates was included to his Southern Kings wider training squad for the 2013 Super Rugby season, but was later removed for be part of the Vodacom Cup squad. He was then invited back to the Super Rugby squad and made his debut against the Highlanders in a 34-27 win at Port Elizabeth. He was a part of four games as a reserve before making in his debut Super Rugby match, the final regular season game in Durban against the Sharks in Durban. He also participated in both the Kings promotions and relegation games against the Lions that resulted in his team the Southern Kings fall out of Super Rugby for 2014.

In May 2015, Gates captained the side for the first time in a friendly encounter against the Golden Lions. With the Kings returning to Super Rugby in 2016 season, Gates was named vice-captain for the season. He captained the Kings for first time against the Cheetahs in May following an injury to regular captain Steven Sykes.

In June 2016, it was announced that Gates would join Japanese Top League side NTT Communications Shining Arcs on a two-year deal following the 2016 Super Rugby season.

The player made his Currie Cup debut at the final stages of 2012, when he was the first player to start their match with the Free State Cheetahs in the promotion and relegation play-offs. Even though he scored a score however, he couldn’t stop the Kings falling to a 53-14 loss and losing the promotion.

In 2011 Gates was included in the South African Kings squad that took part during the IRB Nations Cup in Romania. He was a substitute during their games with Georgia as well as Portugal and was also a non-used substitute for the game against Romania.

In June 2014, he was selected in the starting line-up for the Eastern Province Kings side to face Wales during a tour match during a 2014 incoming tour. He played the first 72 minutes of the match as the Kings suffered a 12–34 defeat.
