Robert Scot Shields (born July 22nd in 1975) is an American former professional relief pitcher for baseball. He spent the entirety of his playing professional career for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of the Major League Baseball (MLB). He was the only player of the Anaheim Angels’ 2002 World Series Championship team that remained on the roster of the team when the team announced his retirement in the year 2011.
Although he started his 2002 season with his team the Stingers, Shields was recalled to the major leagues on the 14th of June and this time with a excellent results. In the post-season that year, he struggled in two appearances during the ALDS, pitching three innings and allowing two earned runs with a 6.00 ERA.
When Rodríguez replaced veteran Troy Percival as the Angels’ closer in 2005, Shields emerged as the club’s trusted setup man, pitching the eighth inning as the bridge to Francisco. In this capacity, he led the American League with 91.2 innings of relief pitching, and ranked second with 98 strikeouts and 32 holds. When Francisco was placed on the disabled list from May 15 to May 31, Shields stood in as the club’s closer, earning five saves in six save opportunities. Overall, Shields posted a 10-11 record with a 2.75 ERA.
Shields was a regular within the Angels bullpen following the 2002 season. He was part of 2003’s World Series Championship team, however, he did not do well in the postseason. He allowed two home runs over 1/3 innings at the end of Game 5, his sole appearance during the playoffs that season.

He started the career of a relief pitcher in 1997 at Low-A Boise with 7-2 that included two saves, and an 2.94 ERA. The following year, he made the move into Single-A Cedar Rapids and posted an overall record of 6-5, with seven saves and an 3.65 ERA. The year 1999 saw him divided his time between a starter and reliever in high-a Lake Elsinore, gaining a 10-3 record and the 2.52 ERA and one save. In his nine starts the pitcher was able to complete two games, and one win. For his work in that season the team was awarded Angels Minor League Pitcher of the Year. He was elevated to Triple-A in 2000 and struggled to keep it up with a 7-13 record as well as an 5.41 ERA.
Although he began the year 2001 with Triple-A Salt Lake Stingers, Shields was promoted for the MLB in May 25 and made his debut against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 26, pitching an inning or more with just one single hit as well as one walk. He was optioned to return in Salt Lake, but was called up on the 27th of June. In his eight relief appearances for the Angels, Shields allowed eight hits and seven walks prior to being sent returning for Salt Lake, where he continued to play for the remainder of the year.
