Clyde Clauthen Mayes Jr. (born 17 March 1953) is a retired American professional basketball player. He was a member of as well the National Basketball Association (NBA) as well as in Europe for different teams. His international career brought the player across Italy, France and Spain during 12 years. At 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 meters) high and weighting 225 pounds Mayes mostly played in his power forward role.
In twelve seasons Mayes played for teams from Italy, France and Spain. In 1983-84, he was named an All-Star player in Legadue Basket while playing for Alpe Bergamo.
The following season, Mayes was the star on a team that finished 22–9, including 11–1 in conference play, en route to conference regular season and tournament championships. He averaged 17.3 points and 13.0 rebounds on the year, and Furman would once again qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They finished in fourth place in the East Region, losing to Providence, 95–83, to end their season. After the season, Mayes was honored as the Southern Conference Player of the Year.
After Mayes his collegiate career came to an end at the end of the season, Mayes was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks selected him as the 22nd overall selection at the time of the 1974 NBA draft. He was a part of 65 games for the Bucks as a rookie during 1975-76. Prior to the beginning of the 1976-77 campaign, he was released. Through the rest of the season Mayes was signed for a short time to be released by 3 distinct teams: the Indiana Pacers, Buffalo Braves and Portland Trail Blazers. He was able to appear for no more than five games with each of the three teams. Mayes decided that he’d be more successful overseas and, as a result, from the 1977-78 basketball season, Mayes was being a player in Italy.

Mayes was raised at Greenville, South Carolina and played basketball at Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a native of the city. In the year 1971, in the fall, Mayes enrolled at Furman University which was situated in Greenville. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules of the day did not allow college freshmen to play in their school’s team for varsity sports, which meant that Mayes was required to be part of his school’s Furman first team in basketball. As he entered his sophomore season of the years 1972 and 1973, Mayes was able to play in 29 of the games and scoring 15.2 per game and 11.1 rebounding per game. The Paladins finished as Southern Conference regular season runners-up (to Davidson) but won the Southern Conference Tournament championship. They were invited to in 1973 for the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament but fell against Syracuse in the opening round, 83-82.
As a senior from 1974-75, Mayes led the Paladins to their third and second consecutive regular season championships as well as tournament championships respectively, and an unprecedented third NCAA Tournament berth (they lost in the second round to Boston College). Furman had a total of 22-7 record, with a perfect 12-0 mark in conference play. In the 2009 publication, ESPN College Basketball Encyclopedia A Full History of the Women’s Game, the team from 1974-75 was named the top team in the history of the program. The team was directed by Mayes who won the Southern Conference Player of the Year award and was also named an All-Third Team All-American in the Associated Press. He scored 21.1 scores and 13.5 rebound per game for the season and also had a strong team of back-up players. Fessor “Moose” Leonard was 7 feet 1 inch (2.16 meters) center who scored 15.5 minutes per game and 6 ft 7 inches (2.01 meters) Craig Lynch provided a solid defensive force.
The personal accolades for Mayes kept coming, as he was named the Southern Conference Athlete of the Year, which is an award given to an athlete in the conference irrespective of sport or season. In 2010, The Charlotte Observer listed Mayes as one of the five best men’s basketball players in the Southern Conference during the 1970s.
