Sayyed Imam Al-Sharif is one of the most popular and richest Islamic Studies Scholar who was born on August 8, 1950 in Beni Suef Governorate, Egypt. Based on Human Rights Watch, Sharif was born in 1950 located in southern Egyptian region in Beni Suef seventy-five miles south of Cairo. His father was the headmaster of Beni Suef. Sharif was a scholar of the Quran and was an hafez (i.e. he knew the Quran) when the sixth grade was over. When he was 15 the Egyptian government accepted him into an boarding school in Cairo for the most gifted students. At the age of 18, he entered medical school and began his preparation for a job being a plastic surgeon with a specialization on burns. The surgeon has been described as “pious and high-minded, prideful, and rigid” at the time.

The year was Peshawar, Imam Al-Sharif (aka Fadl) composed a work for jihadis that aimed to “school them in the proper way to fight battles” and proclaimed to them that their “real objective was not victory over the Soviets but martyrdom and eternal salvation”. The work, “The Essential Guide for Preparation,” was published in 1988, and soon became “one of the most important texts in the jihadis’ training”.

Sometime in the early 1990, Al-Zawahiri and Al-Sharif fell out over questions of strategy and tactics. Al-Sharif opposed Islamic Jihad’s joining another Islamist group, al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya, in its terror campaign against Egyptian government and foreign tourists in Egypt saying, “this is senseless activity that will bring no benefit.”

“On September 10, 1993, al-Sharif took his wife and family to Sudan, where he was received on arrival by Ayman al-Zawahri, in Khartoum Airport. The relations between the two men, however, deteriorated further during al- Sharif’s time in Sudan.”

In 1981, following the assassination of the president of Egypt, Anwar Sadat – who had signed a peace agreement in 1981 with Israel two years prior and a plethora of Egyptian Islamists were arrested. This included Zawahiri who was charged with smuggling weapons. However, he was not Al-Sharif, who left the country and was tried in absentia and was found guilty. Al-Sharif fled Egypt to an UAE in 1982. He worked in the UAE as a physician. He later lived in Pakistan for a couple of weeks prior to departing to Saudi Arabia, and then returned to Pakistan and again in 1982, working for the Kuwaiti Red Crescent clinic in Peshawar.

Sayyed Imam Al-Sharif (Arabic Syd mm lshryf , Sayyid ‘Imam ash-Sharif) (born 8 August 1950), also known as “Dr. Fadl” and Abd Al-Qader Bin ‘Abd Al-‘Aziz has been called an “major” figure “in the global jihad movement.” It is believed that he was “one among Ayman Al-Zawahiri’s earliest associates,” in addition to his publication al-‘Umda and I’dad al-‘Udda (“The Fundamentals of Making Ready [for Jihad ]”), was utilized as a jihad-related manual at Al-Qaeda camp training in Afghanistan. Fadl is believed to be among the first members of al The top al-Qaeda group.

In 1989, bin Laden moved from Afghanistan to Sudan along with Zawahiri and most members of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Imam Al-Sharif, who was finishing “what he considered his masterwork, The Compendium of the Pursuit of Divine Knowledge”, agreed to go at the urging of Al-Zawahiri.
