Walter Centeno is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Manager who was born on October 6, 1974 in Palmar Sur, Costa Rica. Walter Centeno Corea (born 6 October 1974) is a retired Costa Rican football midfielder who is among the top Costa Rican footballers.

He was retired in 2012, and his final match in the league took place 5 May 2012, with Saprissa in a match against Santos de Guapiles. Saprissa ended the no. 8 shirt in honour of him as well as definitey retiring the number. 10 jersey from Alonso Solis.

With Saprissa, he has won 10 national championships and 1 CONCACAF Champions Cup, won the title with a 3–2 aggregate win over Mexico’s UNAM Pumas in the final, and was part of the team that played the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship Toyota Cup, where Saprissa finished third behind São Paulo and Liverpool. His appearance at this tournament was considered as outstanding by FIFA experts.

After 7 years at Saprissa he had a short spell abroad when he moved to AEK Athens of Greece. While playing for AEK, he participated in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage managing to score in the team’s away home draws against Real Madrid at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu (2–2) and AS Roma at Stadio Olimpico (1–1). He however returned to Saprissa after one season in Europe.

He was named the best player of the 2003-2004 Costa Rican season by the Costa Rican sports media, after scoring 9 goals and directing Saprissa’s offensive, assisting Saprissa’s team be the league champion.

Centeno was the first player to play with his Costa Rican national team on 27 September 1995, against Jamaica. Centeno has been an integral part of the national team for the past thirteen years, taking part during the Pan American Games held in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1995; and the Copa America tournaments of 1997 2001, 2003 and 1997 and playing in the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and the FIFA World Cup in 2006. The 1st of April in 2009 was the day that He surpassed the record for the number of caps won by Costa Rica (held then by Luis Marin, 124 caps and 5 goals) up to 18 November 2009, he holds 24 goals and 137 caps. He was captain of the Costa Rica national football team for the final part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifications. Rodrigo Kenton, the appointed manager to replace her predecessor, Hernan Medford, picked Centeno to fill this crucial job in the team due to of his previous experience, toughening and leadership. Centeno played his final game for his national squad on the 18th of November 2009, in which they came to a 1-1 draw, and Centeno scored. The result meant the fact that Costa Rica will not be participating in the FIFA World Cup 2010. Centeno’s goal was his final being an International player. It was also the final goal in his 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying stage.

The nickname is Pate, Centeno started his career with Saprissa and was loaned out to Belen who made his debut for the club on February 4 against Alajuelense. His first goals came on September 3rd 1995 with Belen at Turrialba. The nickname he earned during his youth because of his love for pate’s.

In April 2013, Centeno came out of retirement to join Puerto Rican side Bayamón.
