Heins signed with Richmond Kickers, the USL Pro league on March 23, 2011. The team reached the semi-finals of U.S. Open Cup Lamar Hunt in Heins’ first season. Heins played a major role in the Richmond Kickers’ incredible run that saw them defeat Sporting Kansas City by 2-0 and Columbus Crew by 2-1 respectively. They eventually lost to the Chicago Fire. Heins was resigned by the club for the 2012 season, November 22, 2011.
After the Harrisburg City Islanders season, Ryan was loaned out to the Rochester Rhinos (USL First Division). Ryan displayed his versatility while on loan by playing both forward and midfield, as well as defense. At home, he scored his first USL-1 victory against Portland. He signed a contract to the Rhinos after the season was over. Then, he returned to indoor play for the Kixx. Ryan was a key player in the 2009 Rhinos’ U.S Open Cup semifinals. He won the penalty shot that beat the Columbus Crew to win the quarter final. He was with Rochester throughout the 2010 season.

Heins was also a member of the USL Premier Development League’s Ocean City Barons for five seasons. Heins was the club’s captain in 2007 and Most Valuable player in 2007. In Ocean City’s 66 games, he scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists. He also participated in six Lamar Hunt US Open Cup matches during his PDL career. This helped the Barons reach round three in 2005, defeating the Long Island Rough Riders (USL Second Division) 4-0. Heins was also involved in the game. He also assisted Ocean City in beating Crystal Palace Baltimore, USL Second Division, 1-0 in round one in 2007.
Heins was the MISL’s first expansion draft selection. Heins spent one season in Philadelphia before being signed by the Harrisburg City Islanders, USL Second Division. He was the team’s top scorer with seven goals and one assist in the regular season. He scored a goal in round one of the 2008 league playoffs but was defeated by Crystal Palace Baltimore in a penalty kick shootout.
Heins has been a consistent member of the broadcast team for Richmond Kickers during their 2013 USL Pro season providing color commentary. Heins is heavily linked with the Richmond podcast and radio show Total Soccer Show that airs twice weekly on WRIR-LP.
