O’Reilly grew in Seaforth, Ontario where he played minor hockey for both the Seaforth Stars (MHAO) and the Huron-Perth Lakers. O’Reilly was drafted by the Windsor Spitfires, in the 8th round (150th overall), in 2002 OHL Priority Selection. O’Reilly was a member of the St. Marys Lincolns Jr.B during the 2002-03 season. O’Reilly was a member of the Western Ontario Hockey League (OHA) where he was the top scoring rookie and earned the WOHL All-Rookie Team. He then joined the Windsor Spitfires for the next season.

He also established the best plus minus rating of +9, further proving O’Reilly’s defensive skills as a Centre. O’Reilly led the Spitfires to victory in the 2005 playoffs. He scored 4 goals and five assists for 9 points. This placed him second in playoff scoring.

On July 7, 2011, O’Reilly signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators. At the start of the following 2011–12 season on October 28, 2011, O’Reilly was traded from the Predators to the Phoenix Coyotes for a 4th-round draft pick in 2012.
