Donato, who had led the Crimson in scoring during the 2017-18 season as a junior with 26 goals and 17 assists for 43 point in only 29 games, decided to leave college and become a professional. On March 18, 2018, Donato signed a three year, entry-level contract to the Bruins. Donato, despite leaving college hockey, was still enrolled at Harvard classes and hoped to complete the semester while playing in NHL. The next day, Donato made his NHL debut. He scored his first NHL goal and assisted in an overtime loss to Columbus Blue Jackets. Donato made his playoff debut in Game 2 of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, a 7-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On February 20, 2019, Donato and a 2019 conditional fifth-round pick were traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Charlie Coyle. He made his debut for the Wild on February 21, recording two assists in a 4–1 win over the New York Rangers.

Donato began the 2018–19 season with the Bruins. On November 1, he was assigned to the Bruins’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Providence Bruins after playing in 11 games. He was recalled by Boston on November 28 after recording nine points in 10 games for Providence. Donato was reassigned to Providence on January 28, 2019.

Donato was selected to the United States men’s national ice hockey team. He will compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics men’s tournament. Donato was the leader in scoring for the United States with six points. Additionally, Donato’s five goals placed him in a tie with Kirill Kaprizov and Ilya Kovalchuk for the most goals. The team’s overall performance was disappointing as USA finished seventh.
