He made his class debut in March 2012 when he was a substitute for the Blue Bulls’ 2012 Vodacom Cup match against Griquas in Pretoria. He also made two appearances on the bench in the matches against the Golden Lions, and the Leopards.

After the 2014 Vodacom Cup competition, Van Rooyen moved to Kimberley to join Griquas on a deal until the end of 2014. During July of the same year, he represented his new side twice during the 2014 Currie Cup qualification tournament, making appearances from the bench against the Falcons and the SWD Eagles, as Griquas won the qualification tournament to secure a place in the 2014 Currie Cup Premier Division.

He returned to first class action during the 2014 Vodacom Cup as he played in the final few minutes of the Blue Bulls’ match against the Falcons.

Van Rooyen did not make an appearance for the rest of 2012 and the first half 2013 but returned to action during the 2013 Under-21 Provincial Championship. He scored a brace against the Leopards U21 team in Potchefstroom, and a victory over the Free State XV Pretoria. This gave him a total twelve starts.

Van Rooyen represented Blue Bulls in the Craven Week tournaments at both primary and secondary school level. He played at the Under-13 competition in 2005, and advanced to the Under-18 competition 2010. In his first appearance at the senior event, he scored a try against the Golden Lions’ under-18s in Welkom.
