Rowan Wingate Robertson, born 22 November 1971, is an English rock guitarist. He currently plays in the Las Vegas production show Raiding the Rock Vault as well as for Bang Tango. He is also a DC4 player. Robertson has also played the guitar for Violet’s Demise, Dio and Vast. Robertson also worked as a film composer on Amber Moelter’s Dirty Step Upstage. He has also filmed many instructional videos for guitar.

Initial Lock Up the Wolves sessions included Jimmy Bain and Vinny Apice. Later, Jens Johansson joined the group. The original Lock Up the Wolves line- up included Jimmy Bain, Vinny Appice, and Jens Johansson. Appice and Bain were replaced by former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright. The band went on tour to support the album and released the album on 15 May 1990.

DC4 originally featured Shawn Duncan (of Odin) on drums, Matt Duncan on bass, and Jeff Duncan (of Armored Saint and Odin) on vocals and guitar. DC4 released their debut album, Volume 1, with guitarist Hyland Church in 2002. Rowan joined the band in 2006 as a replacement for Church and featured on the band’s second album, Explode, in 2007. Robertson also appeared on their third album, Electric Ministry in 2011.

In 2005 Robertson also began collaboration on a project called Wicked Outlaw. “The new band, featuring guitarist Rowan Robertson and Finnish composer and bassist Marko Pukkila (formerly of Altaria),” was “writing original material” and was expected to debut and tour the United States and Europe in 2006 according to Blabbermouth.net. Initial gestures to organise Wicked Outlaw actually dated back to as early as May 2004 and was known to be looking for a singer and drummer. Although the current status of Wicked Outlaw is unknown, Robertson has never stated that work on this project has concluded.

Lock Up the Wolves was a significant evolution of Dio’s band. Ronnie James Dio was able to replace his entire band from the previous album. However, he only did this after collaborating with them on Lock Up the Wolves. The album wasn’t a sudden change to the band’s previous work. It was a gradual evolution in the band’s sound, which was finally delivered by one the strongest lineups. The music industry would undergo a dramatic change between 1990 and 1991 as Grunge made a bold commercial appearance in the music market. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains had been signed to major labels by that time and had done well commercially.

Robertson was a Dio fan and became aware of Craig Goldy leaving Dio following the release of Dream Evil and subsequent tour. Robertson made an effort to get in touch with the band’s management and asked for an audition. His first attempt was unsuccessful. Robertson reached out to Phonogram Records after seeing Craig Goldy and Dio perform live at Donington Castle’s Monsters of Rock festival in 1987. Kevin Ridel and Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo recruited Robertson. Robertson, who moved to Los Angeles with his Dio years in the 1990s, was closely connected to Los Angeles’ music scene. This was after the heavy rotation of grunge musicians that began to decline following its peak in late 1990s. Robertson worked with Violet’s Demise’s Oni Logan throughout this period – a collaboration which would eventually lead to the release of Violet’s Demise’s debut album. This was a project that had been put on hold for many years. Elektra released the band’s first full length album in 2003, which was produced by Rivers Cuomo and Radioactive. It featured the singles “Taken for a Ride”, and “I Just Wanna be Loved.” The WB television series Smallville featured “I Just Wanna be Loved”, which was released on the soundtrack. EA Sports’ John Madden Football 2003 video game soundtrack featured “Taken for a Ride”. WB gave the band more support when they featured “Taken for a Ride” on an episode of One Tree Hill. The song was also featured in a trailer for The Girl Next Door, a FOX feature film.

Robertson’s tenure in Dio was cut short by music industry persistence for a Ronnie James Dio reunion with Black Sabbath. In 1991 it was announced that the highly anticipated reunion would take place. At that time, the band, including Robertson, had been writing songs for an upcoming album that had been scheduled for a May 1991 release. Once a Black Sabbath reunion with Ronnie James Dio was announced, what would have been Robertson’s second album with Dio was shelved. Robertson has confirmed the existence of rehearsal recordings for what would have been the follow-up to Lock Up the Wolves but he has stated these will remain archived and he does not feel comfortable releasing any of this to the public, maintaining he would have only done that with permission from Ronnie James Dio himself.
