She was elected Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne for 2017. Since 1996, she has been a Labour councillor in the Newburn Ward.

Wright served as Secretary of the Labour Group for 10 years, from 2006 to

2016. She resigned after being elected Sheriff. She was elected Lord Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2017, a position held by her mother Councillor Belle Nixon 20 years earlier. Marie Curie, the Children’s Heart Foundation at Freeman Hospital and the Nicole Rich Foundation were her chosen charities during her term as Lord mayor.

Wright has been a Labour councillor in Newburn Ward since 1996. She was first elected to this office in November 1996, after Bob Brown died. She was the 100th woman elected to Newcastle City Council.

Wright spent ten years working at Bainbridge. She started as a junior secretary and ended up as the Secretary to Goodwill Manager. After having her sons, Wright left Bainbridge and returned to work at Newcastle College in 1987. She served in many roles at the College over her 26-year tenure, and retired in December 2012. She completed her education at the College, studying for a National Certificate IT Apps. Wright has held many council positions since 1996. Before becoming the Leader and Cabinet form, Wright was Chair of the Cityworks Committee. Her term ended in 2004, when Labour took control of the city. She was an opposition member of the Regulatory Committee and became its chair when Labour regained control. This role was re-elected for 2017-18.

Wright later went back to work and spent four years working for the Academic Health Science Network as a PA, retiring at the end of March 2017.
