Robert Alton Harris, fifth child of Kenneth Harris and Evelyn Harris, was born at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Kenneth was a US Army sergeant who received a Silver Star for his service during World War II. He also received the Purple Heart. Both of Robert’s parents were alcoholics. Robert was reportedly born prematurely due to Kenneth punching Evelyn in her abdomen. Robert may also have had fetal alcohol syndrome. Robert was particularly targeted by his father for abuse, as he believed Robert was the result of an affair. Following Kenneth Harris’ discharge in 1962, the Harris family moved to Visalia (California) in order to be closer to their children. Kenneth Harris was twice jailed for sexually abusing his daughters, once for 18 months in 1963 and again for a longer time in 1964. Kenneth was in prison and the rest of the Harris family lived a migrant lifestyle in the San Joaquin Valley while Kenneth was behind bars.

Robert, aged 13, spent four months in juvenile detention centre for stealing a car. Harris was raped repeatedly while he was in juvenile detention. Evelyn left Robert, then 14 years old, in Sacramento, and left him to his own devices. He made his way to Oklahoma to stay with his sister and brother, but he then stole a car and was later arrested in Florida. After spending three years in Florida’s juvenile detention system, he was released when he reached 19 and sent to Chula Vista. Harris and his wife married in June 1973. Their son, Robert Jr., was born in October 1974. Harris beat his brother’s roommate in 1975, while he was living in a trailer park, Imperial County. He claimed he did it to protect his wife, but later, it was discovered that Harris had beaten the victim without provocation. Harris was convicted for voluntary manslaughter. His wife, Harris, filed for divorce during his confinement in San Luis Obispo. Harris was released on January 1978.

On July 5, 1978, Harris and his younger brother commandeered a car occupied by two 16-year-old boys, John Mayeski and Michael Baker, ordered them to drive to a remote area, then killed them. The brothers then used the car as their getaway car when they robbed a bank in San Diego. He was arrested less than an hour after the robbery and charged with murder, auto theft, kidnapping, burglary, and bank robbery. One of the arresting officers, Steve Baker, was the father of one of the murdered boys, but did not realize the victim was his son until later. Harris was convicted and sentenced to death on March 6, 1979. After a series of appeals and stays of execution, he was executed in San Quentin’s gas chamber on April 21, 1992.
