Rob Graham Thirlby, born 2 March 1979, is an English rugby union player. He plays on Yatton’s wing and full back while also serving as the video analyst for Gloucester Rugby. He played previously for Penzance-Newlyn and Moseley before joining Redruth from Gloucester Rugby. He was a regular player for the England Sevens team.
Thirlby joined Bath Rugby in May 2000 after he left Saracens. Thirlby played 36 games for Bath in the Premiership, scoring eight tries. His highlight was the hat trick of tries against Rotherham, on 14 April 2001. He joined Rotherham in 2002. After helping the club get promoted from National Division One to the Premiership, he returned to Cornwall and Penzance & Newlyn in the 2003-2004 season.
Thirlby is married to Jess Garland, a former England netball international. In 2019 she was appointed head coach of the England national netball team. Like her future husband, Garland also represented England at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. They have two children. Thirlby also has a child from a previous relationship. His father-in-law is Chris Garland, a former professional footballer.
Thirlby was an active member of the England Sevens team. Thirlby was the only England player to represent the team at both the RWC Sevens 2001 (and RWC Sevens 2005) and was part of Joe Lydon’s 12-man squad for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The team did not win any medals but they did take home the Sevens Plate. He played 35 games in the IRB Sevens World Series. This was the third-highest number of appearances by an England player at that time, and has been overtaken several times since.

Thirlby started his career at Redruth, before he joined Penzance & Newlyn for the 1998 Safari Sevens tournament. There, he was spotted in Kenya by Kyran Bracken. Thirlby then joined Saracens ahead of the 1998-1999 season. On 16 January 1999, Thirlby made his Sarries debut against Cardiff in an Anglo–Welsh match. He scored 11 points in a victory of 36-22. On 6 February 1999, he made his Premiership debut in a match against Northampton Saints. He went on to make 28 appearances and score six tries.
Thirlby was called up to England’s 2000 South Africa tour. He did not play in the test side but played in three tour matches and scored a try in the victory over Gauteng Falcons, 36-27.
After two seasons with Penzance & Newlyn, Thirlby returned to the Premiership by signing a two-year contract with Gloucester Rugby. After just ten Premiership appearances and a solitary try, Thirlby joined Redruth on loan in January 2007, agreeing a two-year contract with the club in March 2007.
