Warren Gatland, Wales coach, first named McCusker on a 50-man roster of potential World Cup players. After being promoted from the reserve list because of Andy Powell’s injury, McCusker was selected for the Wales squad against South Africa and New Zealand in Summer 2010. As a replacement for Andy Powell, he made his debut against South Africa in the second half on 5 June 2010.
McCusker was the number eight and Wales captain Ryan Jones’ replacement in the 25th minute in Hamilton against All-Blacks on 26 June 2010. He was in good form for the second half of the next season, which meant that he was retained in the Wales squad to play in the autumn internationals.

McCusker is a North Walian native by birth. He started his rugby career with Mold RFC in WRU Division Four North before being taken up by the Scarlets. On 18 August 2007, he made his debut with the Scarlets against the Exeter Chiefs. The Scarlets made him club captain for the 2012-13 season. McCusker was a flanker but he also played at number 8 for Scarlets.
McCusker left the Scarlets at the start of the 2015–16, moving to London Irish, signing a one year contract.
