She became the first woman to score eight clean triples at the 2016 JGP Slovenia. She became second woman, after Russian Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, to land four clean triples in a short program at the 2018-19 Grand Prix Final (the maximum allowed under the Zayak rule). She landed 12 triple jumps in each of the two programs at the 2019 Autumn Classic. This was her second consecutive success, after Tuktamysheva. At the 2020 Four Continents Championships she landed all 12 triple jumps flawlessly, matching the record set by Alena Kostornaia and Tuktamysheva of Russia.
Previously, on the junior level, she won the gold medal at the 2017–18 Japan Junior Championships, won four medals on the Junior Grand Prix series, and finished within the top ten at the 2018 World Junior Championships.
Kihira entered the 2018 Japanese Championships as a favourite to take the national title, but she struggled with boot problems in the competition, and made multiple errors in the short program that left her in fifth place going into the free skate. She placed first in the free skate, her only mistake being a downgraded Euler in her three-jump combination. However, she won the silver medal overall in front of training mate and four-time national champion Satoko Miyahara. The gold medal went to Kaori Sakamoto.
Kihira was the Junior Grand Prix (JGP), debutant in the 2016-17 season. She won the silver medal in Ostrava (Czech Republic) with 0.08 more than Anastasiia Gubanova of Russia. She beat Marin Honda, the World junior champion, by 15.49 points to win the gold medal in Ljubljana (Slovenia) later that month. In the free skate, Kihira was able to land a triple Axel jump. She was fourth at the 2016-17 JGP Final in Marseille.
