Richard Godhard Becker, born February 1, 1972, is an American former professional baseball catcher. He was a Major League Baseball (MLB), outfielder for the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets.
Becker retired from the game after the 2002 season. In 789 MLB games, his career stats include 2,227 at-bats and 570 base hits with a.256 average, 45 home runs, and 66 stolen bases.
Becker made his MLB debut as a switch-hitter in 1993. He appeared in three games, with seven at-bats. He also scored two runs. It was decided that Becker needed to return to the PCL Salt Lake Buzz for a second trip before he could get a full-time job. In 1994, he was again called upon and hit.265. He was more successful batting from the left side of a plate. He hit.316 in 36 games during the 1995 minor league season and was then called up to the Minnesota Twins. 1995 was Becker’s first full season with the Twins. Manager Tom Kelly placed Becker in the role of replacing Kirby Puckett, the Twins’ starting center fielder. He responded by batting.291 and securing his best major league season. He had four hits on July 13, 1997, including two home runs, a double and six RBIs. His numbers dropped the next year and in December 1997, the Twins traded Becker to Alex Ochoa. Becker was traded in December 1997. He bounced between several teams and found marginal playing time with the Baltimore Orioles (New York Mets), Milwaukee Brewers (Milwau Brewers), Oakland Athletics (Detroit Tigers) and New York Mets.
