Rhoda Elizabeth Reddock, born 7 June 1953, was born in Kingstown on Saint Vincent. This is the largest island on Saint Vincent. Her mother was a teacher, and her father was an adviser and agricultural officer to the local farmers. Before her family moved to Trinidad in 1960, she attended Kingstown Preparatory School on Saint Vincent. Reddock completed her primary education at Eastern Girls Secondary School in Port of Spain. She then continued her education at Bishop Anstey High School. After completing her studies at the Mona and St. Augustine campuses, Reddock enrolled at the University of the West Indies in 1971. She then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in social administration at the UWI in 1975.
Reddock started working at UWI as a research fellow in the Institute for Social and Economic Research in 1985. She also pushed for the creation of a UWI gender studies program. She was a member of both the Latin American Studies Association’s Executive Council and Advisory Board, as well as the Caribbean Studies Association’s Executive Council and Advisory Board. She is an International Member of the American Sociological Association.
As a researcher, her work has focused on gender and sexuality in the Caribbean, the history of the Caribbean women’s movement, labour and work, and the effects of gender and race on citizenship. She has studied Indo-Caribbean populations and the manner in which colonialism, traditional class structures and the struggle for economic survival effected men and women differently. Her work on the history of activism in the Caribbean has shed light on how women initiated the move toward democratization from both political and labour perspectives, linking feminist goals and nationalist movements.
Reddock is active in fighting for justice and social parity, aside from her academic pursuits. Reddock attended the Fourth World Conference on Women 1985 in Nairobi, Kenya and the Fifth World Conference on Women 1995 in Beijing, China. She was a founding member and the first chair of Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action. Reddock was responsible for research that led to a regional initiative against child abuse. UNICEF supports it. Reddock spent two years working with Patricia Mohammed and Camille Antoine on a National Gender Policy. Although it was not adopted, Reddock still hopes that it will gain traction.
