Xie Hui started his professional football career with Shanghai Shenhua in the 1994 season. After scoring a lot of goals at Shenhua over the course of six years in the latter part of the 90s, when he was awarded a top tier league title as well as the Chinese FA Cup, Xie Hui was transferred to the 2nd Bundesliga team Alemannia Aachen in January 2000. The 2000-01 season was when Xie Hui was the leading scoring player for Aachen with 14 goals across 24 league appearances. In the following season, Xie Hui netted only once in his 13 appearances. As a result of this decline in his performance He returned to Shanghai Shenhua on loan in March 2002 to get more first-team experience and remain in the China national team. After his loan ended, the club transferred him to a different German second-tier club SpVgg Greuther Furth in August

As an athlete, Xie Hui represented Shanghai Shenhua for the majority of his career. He had many stints at the club and winning the Chinese league title as well as the Chinese FA Cup with the club. He also played for Chongqing Lifan and German clubs Alemannia Aachen, SpVgg Greuther Furth and SV Wehen Wiesbaden throughout his career. In international competitions, he played at AFC Asian Cup 1996 and the 2000 AFC Asian Cup and 2000 AFC Asian Cup.

For the third time he rejoined Shenhua in December 2004 on a permanent basis where he once again revived his career and after two years with Shenhua, Xie headed back to Germany when he joined another second tier German club SV Wehen Wiesbaden on January 1, 2008 on an 18-month contract. When his contract ended Xie would once again return to Shenhua on January 6, 2009 for a testimonial. After the game he officially retired from football and soon became an assistant manager at Shenhua. He was hired by Shanghai SIPG Football club as an assistant coach.
