Mearns was a professional player for the NLL’s Buffalo Bandits, Rochester Knighthawks and served as the captain of the 1997 NLL champion Knighthawks team. Rochester participated in the finals of the NLL’s 1999, 2000 and 1995. He has been the color commentator on the Bandits’ radio broadcasts since his retirement from professional crosse.
Mearns was Head Coach of the Canadian national team that won the gold medal at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championship.
Mearns was named the initial head coach for the St. Bonaventure men’s Division I lacrosse team, in June 2017.
Mearns was a member of the Brampton Excelsiors and won Mann Cup championships 1992 and 1993. He also won three Mann Cup titles with the Six Nation Chiefs (’94 and ’95) and ’96.

Mearns, a former All-American NCAA NCAA lacrosse player at Canisius College (1990-1992), is currently ranked 20th in Division I career point-per-game (PPG). He has scored 95 goals and 95 assists, for 190 career points over 39 games. He is also the Canisius’s all-time leading scorer.
Mearns was a five-year player for St. Catharines Athletics. Mearns was the team’s first Minto Cup champion since 1950. He was also awarded the Jim McConaghy Memorial Cup for Minto Cup M.V.P. Later, he was awarded the “B.W. Evans Award” was later given to Mearns for being the Top Graduating Player.
