Small was picked as the 2nd pick in 2009’s Major Series Lacrosse draft by the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks, just ahead of his former Athletics teammates Dan Coates and Dan Coates. Small completed his debut campaign as a member of the Kodiaks with 33 points and 13 goals.
After his impressive four-year stint with The University of Albany, Small was selected 23rd overall by the Toronto Nationals in the 2009 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft.

Small was a player with his team St. Catharines Athletics in the OLA Junior A Lacrosse League from the year 2004 until 2008. In 2005, he won the Gaylord Powless Sportsmanship Award. In his five years with the Athletics, Small totaled up 278 points and 127 goals in only 100 games. Small also scored the score with a total of 40 goals, and 77 goals in thirty playoff matches.
The 9th of September, 2009 Small was selected 1st in the draft 9th overall in the 2009 NLL entry draft by the Edmonton Rush.
