After traces of cocaine, ecstasy and other drugs were detected in a drug test in 2003, de Villiers was temporarily banned from recreational drug use. He denied that he had taken drugs, but was banned for bringing disrepute to the game. De Villiers did two tests against Argentina in June 2003 and one against the All Blacks during June 2003. He was not allowed to play in the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Stade Francais reached the final of the French championship where they beat USA Perpignan 38-20 to win the title. He was able to return to the French squad for the 2004 Six Nations Championship. He also played three more test matches in the same year. He was awarded 10 international caps for France in 2005. Stade Francais, which were finalists at both the 2004-05 Heineken Cup, and the French championship, lost both. He won the 2006 Six Nations Championship together with France the following season.
In December 2019, De Villiers has been hired as scrum assistant coach for Scotland.
De Villiers was part of France’s 2000 Six Nations Championship team and participated in five matches in France. De Villiers also received two more international caps in November 2000. He was part of the starting line-up in the second test against the All Blacks. He was able to cement his place in the starting line-up, playing all the Six Nations Championship games and the June and November test matches.
