Peter Mikael Englund (born 4 April 1957) is a Swedish writer and historian from Sweden. Englund writes non-fiction works and essays, mostly on the history of Sweden, particularly his time in the Swedish Empire, but also on other historical occasions. His writing style is very simple style, presenting the narrative information usually left out in most books on history. His books have been gaining popularity and have been translated into a variety of languages, including German as well as Czech. Englund was the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy from 1 June 2009 until 31 May 2015, after which his successor was Sara Danius. In January 2019, Englund announced that he as well as another academy fellow, Espmark returned in active status as members in the Swedish academy, which they had been absent since April 2018.

On April 6, 2018 Englund made it clear that he was no longer participating in the work of the Academy. On the same day Klas Ostergren, and Kjell Espmark announced that they would cease to be active participants in the Academy.

In 2009, perhaps in order to dissociate himself from Engdahl Engdahl, the former Nobel secretary Englund, “criticized the jury for being too “Eurocentric in its approach to the jury panel” as well as “told to the Associated Press that it was more easy for Europeans to understand European literary works”. On December 14, 2014 Englund announced his resignation from the position of secretary to the Swedish Academy, and he was succeeded by Sara Danius May 31, 2015. On June 1, 2015, Sara Danius succeeded Peter Englund as the permanent secretary.

Englund has studied archaeology and history and theoretic philosophers in the course of his studies at Uppsala University, completing a bachelor’s degree in 1983 then he began master’s studies at the Department of History. He received the Ph.D. in 1989 for his dissertation Det hotade huset (English title in the abstract of the dissertation An house in Peril) (1989) An investigation into the worldview of 17th-century Swedish nobles. In the time he was doctoral students as well, he worked for for MUST, the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (“MUST”), prior to the time he received his doctorate, he published the best-selling Poltava which is a thorough account about the Battle of Poltava, where the forces of Swedish King Charles XII were defeated by the Russian army of Tsar Peter I in 1709.

Englund has been awarded The August Prize (1993) and the Selma Lagerlof Prize for Literature (2002). He was elected as a member of the Swedish Academy in 2002. The Academy was established on June 1, 2009. the Academy’s permanent secretary was replaced by Horace Engdahl as the permanent secretary of the Academy.

On 10 January 2019, Englund announced on his blog that he and fellow Academy member Kjell Espmark would be returning as active members of the Academy. He stated that continued work to renew the Academy has now reached a point that it must be done from within.
