Kamanio Chattopadhyay is one of the most popular and richest Scientist who was born on March 3, 1950 in West Bengal, India. Born on the 3rd of March 1950 within the Indian state of West Bengal, K. Chattopadhyay finished his master’s degree in mechanical engineering at the Regional Engineering College, Durgapur (present-day National Institute of Technology, Durgapur) of Burdwan University in 1974. He later transferred towards Banaras Hindu University where he received his master’s degree 1973. Then, he began his doctoral studies in the university under the direction of Patcha Ramachandra Raowho was who was a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Laureate and in the course of his research and studies, he was appointed to BHU as lecturer in 1975. After earning the PhD by the year 1978, he relocating to the US to pursue his post-doctoral research that he completed in the lab that was run by Hubert Aaronson of Carnegie Mellon University. After returning in India in 1983 and joining in the Indian Institute of Science as an assistant professor. There, he performed his regular duties until his retirement in the year 2015. In this time when he was head for the Materials Research Centre from 2000 until 2004, and was head of the Department of Materials Engineering from 2004 until 2008, as the chair for the Institute Nano Science Initiative from 2007 until 2010, and also as chairman of the Division of Mechanical Sciences during the period 2008-2015. After retirement, he maintains his affiliation in the IISc IISc with various roles. as a part of its research efforts at the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) which is also the convenor of the Advanced Facility for Electron Microscopy as its convenor from 2010 and is the convenor of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Energy Research since 2012, and is also the director of the Non Equilibrium Processing and Nano Materials Group. Between, he has many trips abroad and the position of visiting research professor in Carnegie Mellon University, visiting professorships at the Cooperative Research and Development Center for Advanced Materials of Tohoku University and Kyoto University as well as visiting scientist assignments with Oxford University, Cambridge University and Illinois University are some of the opportunities.

Chattopadhyay is most famous for his work on decagonal nanoquantum nanocrystals, which was achieved in 1985 together in 1985, with L. Bendersky and S. Ranganathan. He also has been acknowledged for his work on the how to synthesize and characterize nanocomposites as well as quasicrystals. He’s elected a fellow at of the principal Indian science academies which are. Chattopadhyay is the co-director of Solar Energy Research Institute for India and United States (SERIIUS), an Indo-US joint venture for the development of low cost solar electric technologies, and has conducted a number of seminars and symposia on behalf of the consortium. He is involved in many inter- institutional exchange programs which include the research associations of Indian Institute of Science with Cambridge University and Exeter University. He is the coordinator of the National Microgravity Research Programme (NMRP), a multidisciplinary research forum of the Indian Space Research Organization for advanced research in Microgravity science. He is a member of the National Steering Committee of the Indian Institute of Metals and served as its vice president during 2012-13 and as the president for the term 2013-14. He co- chaired the 11th Asian Microgravity Symposium–2016 held at Hokkaido University, Japan and sat in the advisory committees of the International Conference on Metals and Materials Research organized by the Indian Indian Institute of Science, held in June 2016 and the International Symposium on Energy Materials : Opportunities and Challenges (ISEM-2011) held at Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata in March 2011. Besides mentoring a number of master’s and doctoral scholars in their studies, he has delivered invited or keynote addresses at several conferences which include Fifth International Conference on Solidification Science and Processing, International Workshop on Advanced Co-based Superalloys: 3.0 and International Conference on Functional Nanomaterials and he is a speaker designate at the TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition to be held in March 2017 at San Diego, California. He is a former editor of the Journal of Materials Science of Springer Science+Business Media and is a member of the Board of Trustees of T. R. Anantharaman Education and Research Foundation, a Hyderabad-based non- profit organization promoting human resource development in engineering sciences.

The first researches conducted by Chattopadhyay as part of his PhD studies together with Ramachandra Rao were on rapid solidification of aluminum alloys , and at this point it is believed that he discovered aluminum-based binary glasses and nanodispersed composites. Then in his time in Carnegie Mellon University, he worked alongside Hubert Aaronson, on growth of bainite in the Cu-Zn system as well as the controversy surrounding it and continued to work following the return of India and collaborated together with L. Bendersky and S. Ranganathan that resulted in finding decagonal quarks as early as 1985. His research, both laboratory and theoretical, helped in the synthesis and analysis of several nanocomposites and quasicrystals. He also is recognized for his work on the synthesizing nanocomposites, phase changes, superheating, large superheating when melting dissimilar joining processes as well as surface modifications, and magnetic nanostructures. In the following years, he changed his attention to the creation of high temperatures of steel and aluminum alloys that are used in the fields of energy and aerospace and also multi-component alloys with ultrahigh strength like bulk metallic glass which are extremely ductile. His work has been published in a variety of peer- reviewed papers; Google Scholar and ResearchGate are online repositories of scientific research are able to list 407 and 360 articles as well. In addition, he’s written an article, Aluminum Based Nanoeutectics: Synthesis and Microstructure and contributed chapters to edited books by other authors. He also holds a number of patents which include those on Solder compositions, Nickel-Aluminium-Zirconium alloys and High Impact Solder Toughness Alloy.

Kamanio Chattopadhyay (born 1950) is an Indian materials engineer. He is also an honourary professor of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. The chair is for the Mechanical Sciences Division of IISc and was a previous chair for the Department of Materials Engineering.

Chattopadhyay was awarded the first major honor during his professional career, in the year 1979, when he was selected for his Young Scientists Medal by the Indian National Science Academy. He was awarded the MRSI Medal of the Materials Research Society of India in 1990 .
