The Carruthers team completed with a podium finish during the U.S. Championships in January 1979. However their performance improved over the next season. Following their victory at the International St. Gervais in August 1979 They won the Gold at the Nebelhorn Trophy, and silver during the 1979 Norton Skate (the inaugural Skate America). They finished 2nd at the 1988 U.S. Championships, and were selected for their very first Winter Olympics, where they placed 5th in the competition. They took the first U.S. National title in 1981, and then climbed onto the World podium at the 1982 World Championships. After winning their fourth National title they were invited to their second Winter Olympics and won the Silver medal.

After retiring from professional skating, Carruthers worked as a skating analyst for the Fox, ABC, and ESPN television networks. In 2010, he worked as a daily NBC Olympics skating broadcast analyst on NBC’s Universal Sports network.
