In 2006, he joined Ospreys after having left his previous club, the Welsh Rugby Union, however Ospreys resigned in June of 2010 to pursue other business ventures.
He retired from the sport in the year 1991. He was tournament director at the World Cup in 1999 and was also a former special projects manager of the Welsh Rugby Union.

The record was set during the 1986 Five Nations Championship at Cardiff Arms Park by kicking the exact measurement of a penalty kick at 70 yards, 8 and one and a half inches (64.2m) in the match against Scotland.
Thorburn was also part of the Wales team in 1987 for the Rugby World Cup, during the tournament, he scored a penalty which earned Wales third place in the tournament.
