Paul Gustard (born 2 February 1976) is a former union soccer player, who was a part of Leicester Tigers, London Irish and Saracens as a flanker. He was captain of the rugby team and attended The Royal Grammar School in Newcastle and is the son of the former Gosforth fan Steve Gustard, who was the team’s top scorer during the latter part of the 1970s. He earned Full County Cap honours with Durham County & was selected to be captain of the England U21 team to Australia under manager Jeff Probyn. This was an incredible honor since it was his only position being part of the Premiership Rugby Squad.
On the 17th of December, 2015, it was reported that Gustard was appointed the England team’s defensive coach, working alongside the newly appointed coach of the team, Eddie Jones. Jones stated his appreciation for Gustard “He has overseen Saracens’ growth as a team, he has produced an aggressive defence system there and we are hoping he can do the same for England.”
He quit after 2002 and joined London Irish and then made an impressive 98 appearances over four years with the Exiles as well as a stint as the captain of the team’s first team prior to his move in the year 2006 . He joined London rivals Saracens which he played for. He played in a team which saw two of the most successful seasons for the club, participating in 4 semi-finals in six competitions. This included the final minute defeat against Munster in the semi-final of the Heineken Cup in 2008 under the direction of head coach Alan Gaffney. Gustard was able to play in 48 games in his club, the Men in Black and was a part of the team until the club’s new Head Coach Eddie Jones offered him the position of assistant coach for the first team. In the wake of Jones leaving Saracens, Saracens appointed Brendan Venter who was a former Springbok center director of Rugby who appointed Gustard as their forwards and defence coach.

Gustard was offered a permanent agreement from Bob Dwyer to join Leicester Tigers in the summer of 1997 after his participation in the England U21 tour. He made his first appearance in the Heineken Cup against Leinster during the Heineken Cup, which preceded his first league appearance with a try with Sale at the end of October. Gustard continued to make 97 appearances in the competitive arena for the Tigers as well as being an alternate in the infamous Heineken Cup final versus Stade Francais as well as playing in the squad that they took home four Premiership titles during his five years with the club.
Gustard was plagued by injuries throughout his career, but was able to play for England at every level and the Barbarians. Gustard was part of the England pre World Cup squad in 1999 of 36 , but it was cut to 36 when it was reduced to 30 players in the match against the US in August of 1999. He never did play for the team’s senior side.
On May 21, 2018 it was announced that he will be the new Head of Rugby at Harlequins for the season starting in August 2018.
