Pat Sanderson (born 6 September 1977 in Chester) is an ex- England international union rugby player as well as a former flanker of Worcester. He is the brother of ex- England athlete Alex Sanderson. His first rugby union career flourished in Bury Grammar School, Littleborough RUFC and finally in Kirkham Grammar School and included his first cap in the international arena for England 16 in the England 16 group schools team. He was a member of Manchester Sale (now Sale Sharks) in 1996, and was named by England U21s as well as England A. The club he joined was Harlequins where he was a player at the Powergen Cup final, when Quins were defeated by Newcastle by 30 to 27.
Sanderson has committed the future of his career with Worcester on the day before the 2007/08 season when he signed an extension of his contract for two years that will see him remain with Sixways until the end of 2010.
Sanderson is an established and firm favourite at Worcester Warriors – both of the supporters and the club, and is fondly referred to as ‘Captain Fantastic’. He has played over 100 top flight games and scored 22 tries for Worcester and has again being named as club captain for the 2008/09 season by Director of Rugby for Worcester Mike Ruddock.
Sanderson is the Chairman of the Professional Rugby Players’ Association and he is well placed to understand the problems players face, particularly with injuries. A fractured shoulder, two damaged knees and prolapsed disc have all kept him out of the game at different stages. Sanderson is also now the players representative of the This is Rugby campaign, in association with The Professional Rugby Players’ Association, Premier Rugby Limited and the RFU, to promote the Core Values of rugby following a spate of disreputable incidents in professional premiership rugby.
After the 2003-04 season, he was transferred to the newly elevated Worcester Warriors, as captain He was instrumental in ensuring that the Warriors were at the top of the Premiership. Sanderson started every Premiership game in 2004/5 and Sanderson was awarded the Zurich Players of the Season in 2004/05 as well as The PRA Players’ Player of the Year. This consistent performance led to the possibility of an England being called back for their fall Test opener in Australia during November of 2005. Despite impressive performances during the autumn internationals in 2005 and his selection as captain of England’s tour to Australia In 2006 however, his performance was thrown out of favor with England after Brian Ashton replaced Andy Robinson as coach in the latter part of 2006 and has not played since.
