Patrick Edward Putnam (born December 3 1953) is an American professional baseball first baseman which played Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners as well as the Minnesota Twins. Putnam was also a part of his team, the Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
Putnam was mostly in the lineup with the designation hitter, until May 28th, 1979 the day that the regular Rangers first baseman , Mike Jorgensen got hit on the head with the pitch of Boston Red Sox pitcher Andy Hassler. Putnam was named the Rangers first baseman of the regular team for the remainder of the month. Putnam took advantage of the chance and hit .277 with 18 RBIs and 18 home runs to finish fourth on the Rookie of the Year voting.
After a season and a half in Seattle, Putnam was traded to the Minnesota Twins on August 29, 1984. He signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals in 1985, and spent the entire season with their triple A affiliate, the Omaha Royals. He played two seasons in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in 1986 and 1987 before retiring.
Putnam was once more a force in his way through the PCL in Tucson in 1978. He hit .309 With 21 RBIs and 21 homers. There were only two RBIs for the Rangers during the season, however they were both crucial. He was able to score the one hit in their 1-0 victory against their opponents, the Seattle Mariners on September 22 The following day in the Rangers winning 5-3 on the field at Arlington Stadium over the Mariners, Putnam hit his first major league homer.

Putnam was a student at in the University of South Alabama. The year 1973 was the first time he played in collegiate summer baseball for the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Putnam was chosen for The Texas Rangers in the first round of the 1975 Major League Baseball draft. He had been selected earlier in the year with the New York Mets, but did not make the cut. Putnam was a mediocre hitter, batting .242 during his first professional season in the Rangers farm system however, his average batting was up from.242 to .361 and he hit 24 homers in the year 1976. After hitting .301 having 15 home runs as well as 100 runs batted in by The Triple A Tucson Toros in 1977, Putnam made his Major League debut as the designated hitter, batting fourth with The Boston Red Sox on September 2.
Putnam failed to live up to his early promise, and in 1982 found himself back in the minors with the Denver Bears of the American Association. During the off-season, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners for Ron Musselman.
