Pablo Matera (born 18 July 1993) is a Argentine union footballer in the rugby league who is flanker with Jaguares, the Argentine Super Rugby side Jaguares. Before joining Super Rugby, he played for Leicester Tigers in England and the Pampas XV in the South African Vodacom Cup. Matera is a regular player in Argentina at international level from his 2013 debut having played in more than 50 games for Argentina since.
Matera together with a host of Argentina international players signed with the Jaguares prior to the start beginning the Super Rugby season after its introduction into the tournament. In his first game Matera was issued a yellow flag thirty-three minutes into the match in the match against the Sharks at Kings Park Stadium, Durban. Matera got his very first, and only goal for the season with the Jaguares team in only their fifth home game in the 15th round of their debut season. They faced South African team the Bulls winning 29-11 in the Jose Amalfitani Stadium, Buenos Aires.
Matera played his 50th test for Los Pumas on 18 August 2018 against South Africa, during round 1 on the 2018 Rugby Championship. The test was a 21-34 loss for Los Pumas, who bounced back to beat South Africa the following week. Despite Matera’s good performances against South Africa, new Head Coach Mario Ledesma went on to bench Matera for the 8 September clash against New Zealand.
Matera was named as captain of the Jaguares ahead of the 2018 season.
In October of 2013 just five months after his debut for the international team, English Premiership side Leicester Tigers signed 20-year-old Matera until the close of the 2013-14 season. Matera was initially signed as a replacement for injured Tom Croft. Matera made his debut goal at the club during the 16th round of the 2013-14 campaign against Newcastle Falcons.
