She competed with coach Jack Bauerle’s Georgia Bulldogs swimming and diving team for four years.

In the 2012 United States Olympic Trials, the event that qualifies athletes to compete in the Olympic Games in 2012, Olympics, Smoliga missed the Olympic team due to placing 4th in 100m backstroke (1:00.46) as well as twenty-third for the freestyle 50 meters (25.66). In the semifinals Smoliga achieved a personal best time of 59.82 breaking the one minute barrier on the long course for the first time.

She was struck with mononucleosis prior to the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships, leading her to bad results in both that championship and the 2015 NCAA tournament. However, being the fifth best time at the 100m backstroke, she retained her spot at the national swimming team, and was qualified for the 2015 Pan American Games. She won the silver at the 100m backstroke with a 1:00.06, her third fastest time ever.

At the 2016 United States Olympic Trials, Smoliga qualified for the Olympics by winning the 100m backstroke with a time of 59.02. In doing so, she beat out the previous two Olympic gold medallists in the 100m backstroke, Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin.

The Illinois State High School Championships in November 2012, Smoliga broke the national high school record for both the 50-yard freestyle (100 yards) (51.43) and the 50-yard freestyle (21.99).

Olivia Smoliga (born October 12 1994) is an American swimming competition specialist who specializes in freestyle and backstroke events. She is currently a member of her club, the Cali Condors which is part of the International Swimming League. Olivia is currently the American record holder for the backstroke 50 meters (short track). In this year’s Summer Olympics which took place in Rio de Janeiro, she received a gold medal swimming in the first heat of the 4×100-meter Medley relay.

In the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships held in Istanbul the first major international event, Smoliga won a total of four golds: Two gold, one silver with a bronze. In the final of the 100-meter backstroke, Smoliga beat the field by winning gold with the time of 56.64 swimming from the lane 1. In the 50-meter final, Smoliga had the fastest split of the field, with the fastest time of 29.74. Smoliga also won gold in the freestyle 4×100-meter relay and gold in 50m backstroke (in which she broke record for herself), bronze in the 50-meter backstroke (in which she set an American record) as well as bronze medal in the 4×100-meter Medley relay.

Smoliga has won the 2013-14 NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships with the Georgia Bulldogs, with a gold at the 50yd freestyle, and bronze at the 400yd medley relay.
