Andrew John Stevenson (born 4 July 1963) is a British Conservative Party politician and active director and solicitor of the companies Bendles and Tiffen Estate Agents which was elected for the first time in the general election of 2010 in the role of the Parliamentary Member (MP) from Carlisle.

In January 2014 it was reported that Stevenson was one of a group of MPs who had been charging the taxpayer to help them fill in tax forms. Part of his expenses claim was rejected, although he was not the only MP to be the subject to such action.

Stevenson was opposed to Brexit prior to the 2016 referendum. Stevenson contributed to the Conservative Government’s first defeat over key Brexit legislation in December 2017 when he declined to vote against Dominic Grieve’s amendment requiring Parliament to have a vote on the final deal relating to the UK departing the European Union. Following the election of Boris Johnson as Conservative leader, Stevenson has shifted his views on the possibility of a No Deal exit from the EU saying “it may well come to being the only solution”.

Stevenson is a resident of the town located in Great Corby, which is near the border of Carlisle. The couple is Tracy Nixon and they were married at an Church of Scotland ceremony in Carlisle in 2013.

His first election was during the general election in 2010 for the post of the Member of the Parliament (MP) for Carlisle and was elected from Labour after the MP who was in office Eric Martlew stood down. The MP was elected again in 2015 and in 2017. In addition to his duties as a MP for the constituency He is also the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Food and Drink which advises the direction of the nation’s policy regarding British food and drink production.

Stevenson was unsuccessfully a Conservative candidate for his Denton Holme ward of Carlisle City Council in May 1998, but he was elected to a different Ward just one year after. Stevenson became the first person elected the Conservative City Councillor for Carlisle City Council in May 1999, in Stanwix Urban – a suburban neighborhood on the northern part of the city that has the two lowest levels of poverty within the district. Stevenson resigned from the council on August 2nd, 2010, just days after his election as a Member of Parliament. His party took the next by-election. He was chair of the Carlisle Constituency Association as well as chairman of the Carlisle Constituency Association, Penrith and the Border. He is Chairman of the North Cumbria Conservatives which is an association of four constituencies in North Cumbria.

In January 2013, Stevenson faced accusations of nepotism for employing his fiancée as a Senior Secretary. Although Stevenson admitted that no other applicants had been considered for the role, he argued that she was a qualified legal secretary, and still does that work when not working for him. Although MPs who were first elected in 2017 have been banned from employing family members, the restriction is not retrospective – meaning that Stevenson’s employment of his wife is lawful.
