Oliver Gordon Purnell Jr. (born on May 19th 1953) is an American former basketball coach at a college. He was the head basketball coach for men for Radford University between 1988 until 1991. Old Dominion University from 1991 until 1994 and The University of Dayton from 1994 until 2003. He also coached at Clemson University between 2003 to 2010 as well as DePaul University from 2010 to 2015. He has compiled a record for his career of 448-386.
Purnell also had his career-high 474 assists placing his team in the sixth spot on the school’s all-time list of all-time assists. He is still ODU’s only game steal record of 8 in the game against Washington and Lee in the year 1975.
During his tenure at Clemson, he built the program steadily, improving each subsequent season. He served as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches in 2006–07. At the conclusion of that season, Purnell took his team to the championship game of the NIT, losing to West Virginia in the final, following wins against Syracuse, Air Force, and Ole Miss. In 2008, he guided the Tigers to a third-place 10–6 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference and a runner-up position in the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, losing to North Carolina by 5 points. The 2007–08 season marked Clemson’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in ten years. However, Purnell was unable to win an NCAA tournament game (0–6) during his stints with ODU, Dayton and Clemson.
On March 18, 2008, Clemson extended Purnell’s contract through 2014 and raised his salary.
Purnell was selected at the six-round of the 1975 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Purnell was born in Berlin, Maryland, the second child of Oliver Sr. and Phyllis four children. Purnell was a student at Stephen Decatur High School, where he was a member of the basketball team for boys which won the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Class B championship in the year 1970. Purnell was enlisted for basketball by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. When he was at Old Dominion, Purnell enjoyed an impressive playing career which saw him finish 18th on ODU’s scoring list all time with 1,090 point and taking the Monarchs to win the 1974 NCAA Division II national championship. In 1975, Purnell was selected by Converse as an honorable mention Division II All-American.

- He later became a full-time assistant coach at the school. While Purnell was an assistant full-time in the university, he assisted ODU get to playoffs seven occasions (3 NCAAs and 4 NITs). Lefty Driesell appointed Purnell in 1985 as an assistant coach on the Maryland staff. Purnell was a three-year employee in Maryland before being chosen as the Head Coach in the fall of 1985 at Radford University. Purnell is acknowledged as having one of the most significant one-year changes in NCAA history when his 1990-91 Radford team posted 22-7 records, which is an improvement of 15 games over prior season. The year 1991 saw him was recalled back to Old Dominion to take the head coaching job. After another successful run the year 1994 saw him was offered the position of Head Coach at Dayton University. University of Dayton where he was able to lead his Flyers towards the two NCAA Tournament appearances (2000 2003) before taking over the head coaching position at Clemson University just after the fourth seeded Flyers were defeated by the #13 seeded Tulsa in the opening stage of 2003’s NCAA tournament. Purnell served as the Head Coach for in 1999 for the USA World University Team and helped the team to an 8-0 mark and an Olympic Gold Medal in Brisbane, Australia. Purnell was awarded the USA Basketball’s 1999 Developmental Coach of the Year Award for this achievement. He was elected as a member of make it to the Board of Directors at the 1998 conference of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He was chosen by NABC to be an official member of the USA Basketball Men’s Collegiate Committee. The group is responsible for selection process of collegiate players and coaches for USA Basketball’s teams.
Purnell averaged 14.4 points a game his senior year and 13.8 as a junior. He scored 25 points against Randolph-Macon in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional Championship game in 1975. As a junior, he averaged 6.7 assists per game and tallied 181 for the season. He was accorded the team MVP honors his senior year.
