As an undergraduate player Stammler was a part of the U.S Under-23 team in Portugal as a defensive player. In an interview with the media in 2008 Stammler claimed that the former USA captain of the national team Claudio Reyna mentioned his name to Bob Bradley but a call to play.

During the 2010 campaign coach Hans Backe decided to take advantage of Stammler’s versatility utilizing him as a left sided midfielder as well as in his familiar role of a holding midfielder. On June 5, 2010 Stammler helped New York to a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA scoring on a long-range shot reminiscent of the goal he scored against Chivas in 2006 which was his first MLS goal.

In 2007, Stammler began his campaign as their leading defensive midfielder. His perseverance helped steer the club to a successful start. Later on in the season Stammler was moved into defense because of his ability to hit the ball from the back. He played in 29 games (28 starts) and registering two assists. In 2008, Stammler continued his impressive performance taking part in 26 matches, with one score. He also was vice-captain of the club which that he continued to hold throughout the 2009 season, during which he played in 26 league games. In 2008, Stammler made a goal with Barcelona during a 6-1 defeat.

Stammler was selected 18th overall during the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the MetroStars. But, in the the preseason Stammler was injured in his ankle, which prevented him from playing throughout the entire season. When he joined the team late in the season, Stammler registered only a minute of action in his first season as a rookie. He played more in his second year and played well in the left-hand midfield during the playoffs.

This season, 2006 saw Stammler become the club’s primary left-sided midfielder. His versatility and solid game saw him in 29 games (27 starts) during which he scored five assists and three goals. Stammler was the first player to score an MLS goal on May 20th of 2006 by scoring the long-range shot at Chivas USA. He scored with a header an additional goal within the same match in the 5-4-5 Red Bull win.

In September 2010, Stammler announced that he would be retiring at the close of the 2010 season to attend The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Seth Stammler is now employed by Morgan Stanley and works on the municipal bond desk.
