Simonetta Myriam Sommaruga (born 14 May 1960) is a Swiss politician who is president of the Swiss Confederation for 2020. As a part of the Social Democratic Party, she is a member of the Federal Council since 2010. Sommaruga has been the chief of the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications since the year 2019 and was previously chief of the Federal Department of Justice and Police. She was vice president of the Federal Council for the year 2014; and in the year 2015, Sommaruga took on the position of Presidency of the Swiss Confederation. Then, she returned to the presidency of the council in the year 2020.

On the 11th of August, 2010 she declared her candidacy to succeed Moritz Leuenberger during 2010. Federal Council election. Her election took place on September 22, 2010.

Sommaruga served as the director for the Swiss Consumer Protection Foundation (Stiftung for Konsumentenschutz) from 1993 until 1999. This earned her recognition by the public in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. She has been the president of the foundation from 1999, and also that of the aid organization Swissaid from 2003. She also serves as the Patron of SAFFA 2020 along with former federal Councillors Doris Leuthard and Eveline Widmer- Schlumpf and former federal councillor MichelineCalmy-Rey.

Sommaruga’s political life began as an elected part of the Grand Council of Bern from 1981 until 1990. She was a member of the municipal administration of Koniz between 1997 and 2005. In 1999 she became a member of The National Council; in 2003 she was elected to the upper chamber of the Federal Assembly called which is known as the Council of States, representing the canton of Bern.

She served until 31 December 2015, when Schneider-Ammann succeeded her. Sommaruga became President of the Federal Council again in 2020.
