Arivia was born in New Delhi, India, in 1964. As the child of an Indonesian diplomat She spent the majority of her youth abroad. apart from her time in India she also lived in Ethiopia as well as Hungary in which she studied in the British Embassy School in Budapest. After a few years of studying in Indonesia and Hungary, she completed her senior high school classes in McLean High School situated in McLean, Virginia, while her brother was stationed in Washington D.C..

In the Asian Financial Crisis, Arivia was a well-known scholar and one of Jakarta’s top feminists – protested against the administration using the rising prices of milk as disguise. On February 23, 1998, she joined twenty women at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout to protest the high cost of milk during a demonstration led by Jurnal Perempuan. She also founded Suara Ibu Peduli (“Voice of Caring Mothers”) which was a group that was led by Arivia. The protesters sang, prayed and distributed flowers. They also read a statement calling for more women’s involvement in the resolution of the crisis. Arivia was detained along with two other women: the Astronomer Karlina Leksono Supelli, and militant Wilasih Noviana. After receiving a lot of support from the public they were all released.

In 2009, Arivia published a poetry collection titled Yang Sakral dan yang Sekuler (The Sacred and the Profane). This collection, published a year after the controversial Pornography and Pornoaction law was passed, has been read as a condemnation of the Indonesian state’s continued power over women’s bodies and sexuality. Arivia in 2006 received the Tasrif Award by Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI)

Arivia teaches contemporary philosophy and feminist theory at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Indonesia until 2017. In 2018 she joined Montgomery College, Takoma Park, Silver Spring, Maryland as an adjunct professor in sociology and sociology of gender. She is married to Richard Pollard, with whom she has two children, Anisa Joyce Pollard and Benjamin Arif Pollard. She currently lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

After returning back to Indonesia, Arivia resumed teaching. Recognizing the difficulties of finding feminist material in Indonesia and with the hope of promoting the democratization of Indonesia and defend minorities’ rights, she started work, aided by Ida Dhanny, Asikin Arif along with Toeti Heraty, in establishing the nation’s first feminist journal. Arivia founded The Jurnal Perempuan Foundation [id] in 1995. The first Jurnal Perempuan [id] (Women’s Journal) was released in the year following. Krishna Sen of the University of Western Australia describes the journal as “Indonesia’s first journal of feminist theory”. The journal was able to only afford a small amount of money to publish it and later for social work. During the eight years Arivia was director of the journal the journal did not pay her any salary. She continues to serve on the editorial board.
