Earl died in a streetcar accident on May 31, 1931. However, Louise believed Earl was murdered by the Black Legion. Rumours that Earl was murdered by white racists were widespread and disturbing for Louise and her children. After a dispute between creditors, Louise was awarded a life insurance benefit of $1,000, or $17,000 in 2019 dollars, in monthly payments of $18. The issuer of a larger policy, however, refused to pay Louise, claiming that Earl had committed suicide. Louise rented a part of her garden and her sons hunted for game to make ends meet.
Because of Ku Klux Klan threats—Earl’s UNIA activities were said to be “spreading trouble”—the family relocated in 1926 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and shortly thereafter to Lansing, Michigan. There the family was frequently harassed by the Black Legion, a white racist group. When the family home burned in 1929, Earl accused the Black Legion.
In the 1930s, white Seventh Day Adventists witnessed to Louise Little’s family. Later on Louise Little and Wilfred Little were baptized into Seventh- day Adventist Church. In 1937, a man Louise had been dating–marriage had seemed a possibility–vanished from her life when she became pregnant with his child, Robert (1938-1999). She suffered a nervous breakdown in late 1938 and was admitted to Kalamazoo State hospital. They were sent to foster homes after being separated.

Her grandparents Mary Jane and Jupiter, who died in 1901 and hers 1916, raised her very little. She attended Anglican school in the area and was fluently fluent in English and French. She fled Grenada in 1917 with her grandmother, and settled in Montreal where Edgerton Langdon, her uncle, introduced her to Garveyism (UNIA) and the Universal Negro Improvement Association.
Through the UNIA Montreal, she met Earl Little from Reynolds, Georgia. He was a craftsman as well as a lay minister. They were married May 10, 1919. They moved to Philadelphia the following year, then to Omaha, Nebraska in 1921. She was the secretary and “branch journalist” for the UNIA’s Omaha chapter. They sent news about local UNIA activities to Negro World. This instilled self- reliance in their children and pride in black history. Malcolm, their son, was later to be known as Malcolm X. He said that white violence had killed four of his brothers. Wilfred, another son, later recalled that Louise had received letters from leaders of the movement praising her dedication to the cause and thanking her for her work. Earl and Louise had seven children together: Wilfred (1920-1998), Hilda (1921-192015), Philbert (1923-1993), Malcolm (25-1965), Reginald (1827-2001), Wesley (1928-192009), and Yvonne (1929-1903).
Little was institutionalized at the Kalamazoo Mental Hospital from 1939 through 1963. Malcolm—who had become a criminal, then convicted, imprisoned, and released, and rose to fame as Malcolm X, a leading minister of the Nation of Islam—joined his siblings in securing her release from the hospital.
