Arkani-Hamed’s parents Jafargholi “Jafar” Arkani-Hamed and Hamideh Alasti are both physicists from Iran. His father, who is a native of Tabriz who worked in the Apollo program in the 1970s. He was the chairman of the department of physics of the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran Later, he instructed earth- and planetary science within McGill University in Montreal. Arkani-Hamed came to Canada as a young person with his family during the late seventies.

In 2003, he was awarded in 2003 the Gribov Medal of the European Physical Society In his summer in 2005, while at Harvard He was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa award for outstanding teaching. He also received the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize given at Tel Aviv University to young scientists who have made remarkable and significant contributions to Physical Science. In 2009, he was appointed to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009.. He was the speaker for lectures at the Messenger Lectures on the campus of Cornell University in 2010, and is now an A. D. White Professor-at-Large of Cornell University.. In 2012, he was the inaugural recipient from the Fundamental Physics Prize, the creation of physicist , and internet businessman, Yuri Milner. He was among six physicists in the 2013 award-winning documentary film Particle Fever, and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2017.

In 1999, he joined department of University of California, Berkeley Physics department. He took a leave in Berkeley to go to Harvard University beginning January 2001 and then remained at Harvard as professor from 2002 until 2008. Since 2008, he has been a professor at the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.

Nima Arkani-Hamed (Persian: nym rkhny Hmd born 5 April 1972) is an American- Canadian theoretical physicist with Iranian descent, who has an interest in high-energy quantum field theory, physics and the string theory and cosmology, and collider Physics. Arkani-Hamed is on the faculty that is permanent at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He also serves as director of The Center for Future High Energy Physics (CFHEP) located in Beijing, China.

Arkani-Hamed graduated from the University of Toronto with a joint honours degree in physics and mathematics in 1993. He was accepted to University of California, Berkeley to pursue his master’s studies. There, he was under the direction of Lawrence Hall. The bulk of his research was focused on research on supersymmetry and flavor Physics. The Ph.D. dissertation was titled “Supersymmetry and Hierarchies”. He finished the Ph.D. at the end of 1997 and went on to SLAC in Stanford University for post-doctoral studies. In this time, he collaborated with Savas Dimopoulos, and also developed the idea of extra dimensions that are large.
