Devitt’s research has been focused on the development of practical large-scale system designs for quantum computing as well as communications systems. He developed the first architecture of an atom-optical system that utilized techniques of quantum quantum error correction in a way that could theoretically scale to an unlimited number of qubits encoded. In 2014, working in collaboration with NTT Communications and TU Wien He developed a concept for a system that could be scaled with the Nitrogen-vacancy center. Later, in 2017, he created an extensive system design to support Ion trap quantum computing in collaboration with the University of Sussex. Devitt has also been involved on the development of large-scale Quantum networks, designing concepts for what are known as the 2nd third generation and 4th generation quantum repeaters, and creating, along with scientists from Japan and Australia an quantum-based variant of Sneakernets.
