Hodges was named the starter quarterback position during the 2005 season, prevailing in the battle with a spirited effort over highly-rated Redshirt freshmen Graham Harrell. Hodges began the season with a bang and put up impressive numbers in blowout victories over Florida International University 56-3, Indiana State University 63-7, and Sam Houston State University 80-21. Hodges was the subject of controversy following the win over SHSU in saying that Tech’s offensive could “score 100 points.” Big 12 play started and Hodges was the leader of his team of Red Raiders to a win over Kansas 30-17. They Red Raiders then traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska to play the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. They Huskers had a homecoming day , and determined to retaliate after being snubbed by Tech earlier in Lubbock with a score of 70 points. Hodges played the Raiders in a decisive drive, throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass on 4th down , winning the game and end Nebraska’s homecoming win streak. Hodges enjoyed a stellar day the following week when Tech defeated Kanas State, 59-20. Hodges was able to throw 646 yards, which was the best career total. After the huge win over Nebraska and a career-best performance in the game against KSU, Hodges led the Red Raiders, ranked in the top 10 for the first time under Mike Leach, to Austin, Texas to face off against the eventual champions of the national championship Texas Longhorns which were led by Vince Young. Hodges was able to put the Raiders in the lead early in Austin but they were unable to keep the momentum going as Tech lost their first game 52-17. Tech bounced back with victories over their opponents Baylor 28-0 in addition to Texas A&M 56-17. Tech was later beaten in an BCS bowl bid after losing to a four victory Oklahoma State team, 24-17. The Raiders bounced back to defeat Oklahoma 23-21 in another tight and thrilling game, with Hodges playing the Raiders in the final drive. This gave them Red Raiders a regular season record of 9-2, as well as an Big 12 record of 6-2 and a second-place finish on the overall list of the Big 12 and an invitation to the Cotton Bowl. Hodges completed the regular season in the top spot nationally in passing. Hodges, statistically, had his worst game as a starter, completing only 15 of 32 passes for 196 yards and one touchdown. He was also Tech’s leading rusher, gaining 66 yards on 17 carries. Texas Tech eventually lost 13-10 and ended the season with a 9–3 overall record and #20 in the AP Poll. Hodges finished his career at Tech completing 360 passes out of 543 attempts for 4,308 yards with 33 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also rushed for 224 career yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Hodges is the son of Steve Hodges and Sharon Hodges in Amarillo, Texas and grew up to Hereford, Texas, located in the Texas Panhandle. Hodges played in the high school football league in Hereford High School, where the four-year letterman was in football, and a standout in basketball. He was a quarterback for 2,458 yards and scored 28 touchdowns in 2000 as an senior. He finished his pre-collegiate career with a record of 22-4 as the team’s starting quarterback. Hodges was a redshirted freshman in Texas Tech in 2001. Hodges made his debut in the game against Baylor University as a redshirt freshman in 2002, and completed one pass with 10 yards. Hodges played as a backup for four years, backed on Kliff Kingsbury B.J. Symons, and Sonny Cumbie. Hodges moved up a spot in the depth chart each year. From 2001 to 2004 Hodges played in seven games, passing 8 times in 12 attempts, with 70 yards, and two touchdowns.
