He used part of his Spinoza Prize grant to set up a website targeted at children and promoting science: Proefjes.nl.
He continued his MSc studies under the supervision of Nobel laureate Gerard ‘t Hooft. He studied with twins Erik Verlinde and Herman Verlinde. The original plan was for only one of them to work on string theory. However, all three eventually wrote their thesis on the subject. Dijkgraaf received his doctorate in 1989 cum-laude. His thesis was entitled A Geometrical Approach To Two Dimensional Conformal Feld Theory.

Robertus Henricus Dijkgraaf FRSE (Dutch pronunciation: [ ro]’bertYs hen’rikYs rob@rt?deikgra;f ) is a theoretical physicist, string theorist, and theoretical physicist. He was born 24 January 1960. He is also the Director and Leon Levy Professor at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study, New Jersey and a tenured Professor at the University of Amsterdam.
In 1978, he began his education in Physics at Utrecht University. He completed his equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in 1982, but he decided to continue painting at Gerrit Rietveld Academie. He returned to Utrecht University in 1984 to begin his master’s in theoretical physics.
In 1998 Dijkgraaf was an Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin.

He received honorary doctorates form the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Leiden University in 2019.
