Nigel David Melville (born 6 January 1961) is an ex- England nation’s rugby union captain and team scrum half and is currently director of Professional Rugby for the Rugby Football Union.
When he retired, Melville entered coaching and as Director of Rugby at London Wasps, Melville coached the team to their first professional Premiership title in the year 1996. It was then the team’s three National Cup Final appearances, winning two. In March 2002, he relocated towards Gloucester Rugby, winning the Zurich Championship Final (the year prior to the play-offs, which was being awarded an English award), Powergen Cup and top of in the Zurich Premiership table by a record of 15 points. The club was dissolved in 2005.
Melville started as Director of Professional Rugby for England’s Rugby Football Union in July 2016.
Melville was the youngest captain of England in his debut match in the match against Australia in the month of November in 1984. He would add another 12 appearances in the subsequent four years.

Melville played captain in the England Schools 19-year-old group during their trip to New Zealand and Australia in 1979. England B was the youngest captain of this time. England under 23 during their trip to Romania in 1983.
Melville has earned 13 caps for England. Melville was captain of the whole England team seven times and won four times. Melville traveled in England on a trip to Argentina during 1981. He also travelled to North America in 1982 and New Zealand in 1985. Melville was the replacement for wounded Terry Holmes on the British Lions tour to New Zealand in 1983 but suffered a spinal injury during his second game. He was unable to continue in the tour.
Melville was appointed CEO and President of Rugby Operations for USA Rugby on 11 October 2006. At the time his Roberts’ appointment, USA Rugby had 80,000 registered players in the U.S. One of the goals that USA Rugby chairman Kevin Roberts set for Melville in 2006 was for the U.S. national team to reach the 2011 Rugby World Cup quarterfinals. Under Melville’s tenure, USA Rugby began its “rookie rugby” program, exposing young people to the sport of rugby. Melville predicted in 2012 that professional rugby would come to the United States by 2015. He stepped down from his position with USA Rugby effective 30 June 2016.
