Groom was a regular fixture in the Saints’ starting team and was instrumental in their securing European Champions Cup Rugby for the 2017/18 season. He also featured heavily in both the European Champions Cup playoff games where Saints beat both Connacht Rugby (and Stade Francais) to secure their place in the competition for next season. Groom was appointed to the Super Rugby team of the Lions on 3 April 2018.

At the conclusion of 2016 Super Rugby season, he signed a contract with Northampton Saints to join the English Premiership side. He has been a regular starter for the Midlands team ever since.

Groom was a Varsity Cup winner with UCT in 2011. He was quickly called up to the Stormers side to replace Ricky Januarie (injured) and made a few substitute appearances. He was only able to make Western Province appearances over the next 18 months. Groom was selected in a 31-man South Africa team for the three-match series against a visiting Ireland team on 28 May 2016. After spending a few days training with the South African national team, he was invited to the South Africa A’ team for the two-match series against the touring England Saxons. He was in the starting lineup for the first match at Bloemfontein. However, the visitors won 32-24.

On 27 June 2019, Groom returned to the UK with Pro14 side Edinburgh in Scotland from the 2019-20 season.
